__Grade 2 Math:__

Our goal in Grade 2 is to make Math lessons fun for the students through problem solving activities, games, challenges and hands on experiences. We hope that the children will always be excited to begin a Math lesson! Math skills are taught as much as possible within our units of inquiry. Therefore, many of the Math activities in class are related to the unit which we are currently studying.

Term 3 Math Overview:

During Term 3 students will cover the following topics of study in mathematics: multiplication (facts, arrays, strategies, concepts and skip counting), division (facts, equal groups, strategies, and concepts), multiplication and division fact families, word and story problems, coordinates, graphs and surveys, measurement review, fractions, telling time, and simple probability. __May 2014__

The students will start off this month learning about division (specifically, how it is related to multiplication) and fractions. Towards the end of the month, students will get into telling time on an analog and digital clock to the nearest hour, half hour, and quarter hour.

__April 2014 __

Students have been learning about multiplication in 2G! New Mad Math practice sheets have been sent home for students to improve their quick recall of multiplication facts! To teach multiplication, the Grade 2 teachers are using the following methods:

-Simple memorization games (around the world, flash cards, times tunes math songs, Mathletics practice, mad minute math sheets, etc.)

-Teaching arrays (pictures that represent multiplication facts, you can good multiplication arrays to see what I mean)

-Skip counting ( 5 x 4 = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 or 5, 10, 15, 20) - basically getting the kids to understand that multiplication is just basically repeated addition

-Multiplication halves or doubles ( 7 x 4 = 7 x 2 = 14 / 7 x 2 = 14) (8 x 6 = 8 x 3 and 8 x 3) so, we are basically teaching the kids that if they don't know the high multiplication problems, they can split any even number in half and multiply it, then just double their answer

Lastly, the kids are only expected to know the 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 x tables in grade 2. However, we will be practicing the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 11 tables too as most kids learn the other ones so quickly.

As for motivation, we are using games, dice games, competitions, positive praise, differentiation and not pushing the kids to the point of too much frustration.
